Microsoft Still Wants Yahoo
During the first part of the year Microsoft made a bid to buy Yahoo! for about $42 billion. The deal was for half cash and half Microsoft stock. The rumors are still widely circulating and MarketWatch (http://www.marketwatch.com/news/story/microsoft-could-raise-yahoo-bid/story.aspx?guid=%7B8211D2E2-5D35-470A-A46D-B1D61074641F%7D) says the deal is still most likely on but Yahoo! is trying to get more money for the company. Perhaps a report from Yahoo! detailing an $8.8 billion boost in operating funds by 2010 (http://www.bizjournals.com/wichita/stories/2008/03/17/daily31.html) should have been expected. In the end the only question for us should be which IM client will win? Yahoo! Messenger is much more popular but I can’t see Microsoft letting it be.
Messenger 5.5 and 5.6, RIP
Unsakred.net speculated back in December 2007 that Yahoo! Messenger 7.1 was to be phased out because users were not able to login with their older clients (http://www.bizjournals.com/wichita/stories/2008/03/17/daily31.html). Nothing apparently happened with this story but similar and official headline comes from Yahoo! stating that versions 5.5 and 5.6 of Messenger will be shut down (http://www.ymessengerblog.com/blog/2008/03/11/we%e2%80%99re-retiring-versions-55-56/). Yahoo! will most likely do this by denying certain protocol versions in the YMSG protocol to be accepted. 5.5 and 5.6 were before my time of studying Messenger so I can not be certain.
Forum Down
For some odd reason it looks like the forum is down at the moment. I usually only check once a day so I just now noticed it. I will wait till tomorrow to see if it clears itself up otherwise I may have to reinstall. The odd thing is that I haven’t made any changes lately so it is either a hardware issue (corrupted hard drive sector) or someone has been monkeying with the forums.
